WWE: Ricky Steamboat: The Life Story of the Dragon DVD Reviewby Johnny NorthMonday, August 02, 2010 at 07:03 AM EDTThanks to his outstanding performance at WrestleMania two years ago and his brief feud with current WWE superstar Chris Jericho, interest developed enough in Steamboat for WWE to release a three-disc DVD set that not only includes some of his most memorable WWE, NWA and wCw matches but a documentary on his career. The documentary features a lot of recycled and unaired footage from past WWE documentary DVDs, the likes of Total Non-Stop Action superstar Ric Flair, the Brisco Brothers, Jake Roberts and even top stars today like Kofi Kingston and William Regal share their bit of knowledge on The Dragon. The story of Steamboat's initial rise into professional wrestling and his rebirth after his first WWE exit are the most refreshing and exciting parts on his career. His humbleness and respect towards his competitors is hard not to recognize. A spin-off on the Karate Kid character, Steamboat was always a good guy in every federation he wrestled. His intense and unorthodox style made him too appealing for fans to boo him. He was one of the most spectacular high-flyers in all of professional wrestling and he could always wrestle a very high-pace technical style. Throughout all his hardships, Steamboat really makes you believe that he would do it all over again because wrestling is all he ever wanted to do. Even though he was able to overcome WWE looking down on him for getting time off with his newborn, his career was still tragically cut short and his family fell apart. Steamboat was able to bounce back and is contributing to a whole new generation of wrestling now. Far from the most controversial WWE DVD, the Steamboat DVD is well-deserved appreciation towards a man that worked so hard and without the help of Flair would have gotten so little in return. The matches really show the differences in eras that Steamboat wrestled in and shows how Steamboat was able to compete with the very best no matter who he wrestled. The alternate commentary he provides for his hour-long match with Flair feels like he is going over a lot of what he already stated in the documentary, while the commentary he provides with his bout on Savage is far more insightful and intriguing.
