CBO Report: Debt Will Rise to 90% of GDP

President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget will generate nearly $10 trillion in cumulative budget deficits over the next 10 years, $1.2 trillion more than the administration projected, and raise the federal debt to 90 percent of the nation's economic output by 2020, the Congressional Budget Office reported Thursday.

Hadron Collider Smashes Energy Record

The Large Hadron Collider set a record for high-energy collisions on Tuesday by crashing proton beams into each other at 7 trillion electron volts (TeV) -- three times more force than ever before. Scientists erupted with applause when they witnessed the new record, which surpasses the 2.36 TeV CERN recorded last year.

AT&T: Health Reform Costs Us $1 Billion

AT&T Inc. will take a $1 billion non-cash accounting charge in the first quarter because of the health care overhaul and may cut benefits it offers to current and retired workers. AT&T said Friday that the charge reflects changes to how Medicare subsidies are taxed. Companies say the health care overhaul will require them to start paying taxes next year on a subsidy they receive for retiree drug coverage.

Feds Arrest Militia Planning Cop Killing

Federal agents arrested at least seven members of a self-proclaimed Christian militia group in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio over the weekend, according to the FBI and a leader of another militia organization. The target of at least one of the raids was a group called the Hutaree, which proclaims on a web site that it is "Preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive", according this report on CNN.com. As many as six members of the group were arrested at a wake for one of its members, and the property of its leader was searched by federal agents, said Mike Lackomar, a county leader for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, who cited the FBI for his information.

Winter 5th Warmest on Record

It will probably come as a surprise to most Americans, but the winter just finished was the fifth warmest on record around the world, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The worldwide the average temperature for winter was 54.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

The danger of political violence in this country comes overwhelmingly from one direction -- the right, not the left. The vitriolic, anti-government hate speech that is spewed on talk radio every day -- and, quite regularly, at Tea Party rallies -- is calibrated not to inform but to incite.

Obama Affirms Fed Ban On Abortion Funding

In a low-key event without video coverage, President Obama on Wednesday signed an executive order affirming the Hyde amendment, the long-standing policy which bars federal funding of abortions except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the woman's life. That order was crucial to winning the support of anti-abortion Democrats in the battle to pass health reform. "The president has always believed that healthcare reform ... did not change the status quo," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

Tea Partiers Want Gov to Create Jobs

Tea Party activists want the federal government out of their lives except when it comes to creating jobs. A Bloomberg National Poll finds 70 percent of Tea Party backers want a federal government that fosters job creation. They also look to the government to rein in Wall Street, with almost half saying the government should do something about executive bonuses.

Congressman Fears Guam Might 'Capsize'

At a House Armed Services Committee hearing Friday, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) expressed his concern that the addition of 5,000 U.S. Marines to Guam might cause the island to capsize. "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," Johnson said. Admiral Robert Willard's response: "We don't anticipate that." (Note: This is not an April Fool's joke.)
