God May Have Multiple Particles

There may be multiple versions of the elusive "God particle" -- also known as the Higgs boson -- according to a new study undertaken at the Tevatron particle accelerator in Illinois. Finding the Higgs is the primary aim of the $10billion Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment near Geneva, Switzerland. Recent results from the Tevatron suggest physicists could be hunting five particles, not one.

Arizona's Next Target: 'Anchor Babies'

Time: "Anchor babies" isn't a very endearing term, but in Arizona those are the words being used to tag children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants. While not new, the term is increasingly part of the local vernacular because the primary authors of the nation's toughest and most controversial immigration law are targeting these tots -- the legal weights that anchor many undocumented aliens in the U.S. -- for their next move. Buoyed by recent public opinion polls suggesting they're on the right track with illegal immigration, Arizona Republicans will likely introduce legislation this fall that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona -- and thus American citizens according to the U.S. Constitution -- to parents who are not legal U.S. citizens.

Ax May Fall on Mortgage Interest Tax Break

The popular tax break for mortgage interest, once considered untouchable, is falling under the scrutiny of policymakers and economic experts seeking ways to close huge deficits. Five years ago, a bipartisan tax reform commission created by President George W. Bush proposed ending the mortgage tax break. But the commission's plan stalled in Congress. "I'm not sure that we need to subsidize homeownership at all through the tax system," said Eric Toder of the Brookings-Urban Tax Policy Center.

Laffer: Taxes Will Slam Economy

Arthur Laffer: People can change the volume, the location and the composition of their income, and they can do so in response to changes in government policies. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the nine states without an income tax are growing far faster and attracting more people than are the nine states with the highest income tax rates. People and businesses change the location of income based on incentives.

Brownstein: Bush's Legacy Economic Decline

Ronald Brownstein: On every major measurement, the Census Bureau report shows that the country lost ground during Bush's two terms. While Bush was in office, the median household income declined, poverty increased, childhood poverty increased even more, and the number of Americans without health insurance spiked. By contrast, the country's condition improved on each of those measures during Bill Clinton's two terms, often substantially.

Obama: Oil Spill 'Environment's 9/11'

President Obama said in an interview that the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico will have the same impact on the US psyche as 9/11. "In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come," he said.

Repub Congressman Apologizes to BP

A leading House Republican accused the White House Thursday of a "$20 billion shakedown" of oil giant BP by requiring the company to establish a huge fund to compensate victims of the Gulf Coast oil spill. I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House," said Rep. Joe Barton, referring to the agreement Obama announced with BP.
