Election Night in 5 States

Five states -- Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma and Vermont -- go to the polls Tuesday. In Alaska and Arizona, incumbent Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and John McCain face vigorous challenges from the right. In Florida, the open Senate and gubernatorial contests have attracted self-funding outsider candidates whose free-spending candidacies are testing the resolve of each party's political establishment.

Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq are spending Ramadan on a 12,000-mile road trip, visiting mosques across America and writing about their experiences on 30 Mosques in 30 Days. They made a stop last week in Jacksonville at the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida on the city's southside. "Ramadan is a month to bring people together," they write.

CBO: Stimulus Added Millions of Jobs

The massive U.S. stimulus package put millions of people to work and boosted national output by hundreds of billions of dollars in the second quarter, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday.

Beck Praised Mosque Builder in 2006

Glenn Beck, who has denounced Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf as a radical building a "Allah-tells-me-to-blow-up- America mosque" in Manhattan, praised him as a moderate Muslim when they appeared together on Good Morning America in 2006. "I believe it's a small portion of Islam that is acting in these ways," Beck said during the program, drawing a distinction between terrorists and ordinary Muslims.

Court Rules Against Utah Memorial Crosses

Fourteen 12-foot-high crosses erected along Utah roads to commemorate fallen state Highway Patrol troopers convey a state preference for Christianity and are a violation of the U.S. Constitution, a federal appeals court said Wednesday. "This may lead the reasonable observer to fear that Christians are likely to receive preferential treatment from the UHP," a panel of judges from the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled.

HuffPo: Fox News Ignored Iraq Withdrawal

Huffington Post: MSNBC devoted its entire prime-time footprint to the departure of the last American combat brigade from Iraq, with Richard Engel riding with troops and host Rachel Maddow based in Baghdad. Fox News Channel devoted just under 10 minutes to the story, much of it during Shepard Smith's 7 p.m. newscast, while spending 45 minutes discussing the potential construction of an Islamic mosque two blocks from ground zero.

Muslim Worker Sues Disney Over Hijab Rule

A Muslim employee is suing Disneyland for telling her she can't serve customers wearing a headscarf. "Disney told [Imane] Boudlal that if she wanted to work as a hostess she had to remove her hijab because it did not comply with the 'Disney Look,'" said Leigh Shelton, a spokesperson for her union.

Stewart: Charlton Heston Was Right

Covering the "Ground Zero mosque" controversy Thursday night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart threw the hammer down on Fox News for anti-Muslim rhetoric and in a bit of mind-blowing irony, used Charlton Heston's NRA speech from May 1, 1999, after the Columbine massacre to make a point about tolerance. "America must stop this predictable pattern of reaction when an isolated terrible event occurs," Heston said.
