An Atlanta businesswoman claims to have had a 13-year-long affair with Herman Cain, TV station Fox 5 Atlanta reported Monday. "I was aware that he was married, and I was also aware that I was involved in a very inappropriate situation relationship," Ginger White said.

Afghans Sought Strikes on Pakistan Base
Afghanistan officials claimed Sunday that Afghan and NATO forces were retaliating for gunfire from two Pakistani army bases when they called in airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, disputing that country's claim the strikes were unprovoked.

Walker Recall Effort Halfway to Goal
United Wisconsin, the organization behind the effort to recall Gov. Scott Walker (R), announced Monday that supporters have collected more than 300,000 signatures in the first 12 days of the drive. That puts the effort 55 percent toward their goal of 540,208 signatures -- the number required by Jan. 17 to permit a recall election.

Frezza: Cut Useless College Degrees
Bill Frezza: A little noticed Associated Press news story last week reported that China now plans to phase out college majors that consistently produce unemployable graduates. Any program in which 60% of the graduates failed to find work for two consecutive years would face funding reductions until supply was brought back into balance with demand. This Chinese hand may not be invisible, but it would be one that Adam Smith would recognize. Isn't it amazing that even self-identified communists are figuring out that markets only work when adjustment mechanisms act to reduce surpluses and shortages?

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) will not run for re-election in 2012, he announced at a press conference Monday. Frank, 71, the ranking Democratic member of the House Financial Services Committee, has served in Congress since 1981 and was one of the nation's first openly gay elected officials. "I will neither be a lobbyist nor a historian," Frank said, mocking Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

Islamists Lead in Egyptian Elections
Early election returns have two Islamist groups poised to take a 65 percent majority of seats in Egypt's first Parliament since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. The party formed by the Muslim Brotherhood took about 40 percent of the vote and the ultraconservative Salafi Islamists, many who consider popular entertainment sinful and reject women's participation in voting or public life, had another 25 percent.

Muslims Object to Evolution Too
Muslim students, including trainee doctors on one of Britain's leading medical courses, are walking out of lectures on evolution claiming it conflicts with creationist ideas established in the Koran. "I had one or two slightly frisky discussions years ago with kids who belonged to fundamentalist Christian churches, now it is Islamic overwhelmingly," said Steve Jones, emeritus professor of human genetics at university college London.
