The Iraq War is Over!

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta marked the end of the U.S. war in Iraq at a highly symbolic ceremony Thursday. U.S. soldiers rolled up the flag for American forces in Iraq and slipped it into a camouflage-colored sleeve, formally "casing" it, according to Army tradition. Nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives over the 8 years, 8 months and 25 days of the conflict.

EPA: Fracking Polluted Aquifer

For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency has found chemicals used in fracking contaminating an aquifer. Samples taken from two deep water-monitoring wells near a gas field in Pavillion, Wyoming, showed synthetic chemicals such as glycols and alcohols "consistent with gas production and hydraulic-fracturing fluids," the agency stated. Amy Mall, senior policy analyst with the National Resources Defense Council, said that "it's a game-changer. EPA experts and scientists have recognized that there is real contamination, that there is a real scientific basis for linking it to fracking."

Tomasky: The Coming Obama Landslide

Michael Tomasky: How can Barack Obama, as this new NBC/Marist poll has it, be beating Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney in South Carolina, of all places? The leads are narrow -- it's just 45-42 over Romney and 46-42 over Gingrich. ... Is it conceivable that 10 months and three weeks from now, Obama could actually win the state? If it happens, we will know that the Republicans are headed off the cliff. And that is precisely where we should all hope they go.

Repubs Clash in Iowa Debate

With the Iowa caucuses looming, six Republican presidential candidates tonight clashed over their conservative credentials and personal histories in a Des Moines debate that saw resurgent frontrunner Newt Gingrich battling attacks by his rivals from all sides. But it was Mitt Romney who stole the spotlight for a $10,000 bet with Texas Gov. Rick Perry over what he wrote about the individual health insurance mandate -- then removed -- in subsequent editions of his book, No Apologies.
