Wolf Blitzer, prince of the irrelevant

I had the misfortune to watch Blitzer's ludicrous The Situation Room on CNN the other night, when he "interviewed" James Webb, the Democratic candidate trying to unseat George Allen from Virginia's senate seat.

It has seemed to me for some time that the only "situation" in Blitzer's Situation Room is a situation comdey, with Jack Cafferty about the only useful thing on the concocted mess.  Blitzer pretty much proved it in this absurd interview.

He started by asking Webb about Allen's now-famous "macaca" incident.  Webb pretty much didn't bite, and tried to get some substance in.

So Blitzer asked Webb about his comments, many years ago, that women were probably not suited to all positions in combat.  Webb corrected Blitzer's characterizations, and tried to get some substance in.

Blitzer wouldn't let it go, so Webb flat out said he didn't want to talk about statements from decades ago, "can we talk about foreign policy?"

Of course we can talk about foreign policy, the Blitz said.  But first, what do you think of the Foley scandal?

The Situation is, frankly, pretty Goddamned hopeless.
