Congressman Geoff Davis: Reason 2008 'Why the GOP Can't Attract Black Voters'You've probably read by now about how Kentucky Republican Congressman Geoff Davis referred to Obama as "that boy" in a speech he gave to a Republican audience in Kentucky over the weekend. Bob Barr for President? Really? Bob Barr?It seems pretty likely now that the one and only Bob Barr, formerly of the House, will seek the Libertarian Party presidential nomination. That's probably disappointing to the many Ron Paul fans who wanted Paul to run as a Libertarian, but, hey, you can't have everything. At least the racists are likely to be just as happy with Barr as they would have been with Paul. Washington Post Wins Another Phony PulitzerWashington Post reporter Gene Weingarten, one of the funniest journalists I've ever read, won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing yesterday, honored for a piece in which world-class violinist Joshua Bell played incognito at a DC Metro station and drew little reaction among most of the philistine passers-by. It's an entertaining piece that's completely unworthy of the Prize because Weingarten engineered the stunt. White House Claims to Have Ditched Rose Colored Glasses on IraqIn today's White House press briefing, Tony Fratto said at least twice that the administration had shed its "rose colored glasses" on Iraq, and was now taking a clear view of the situation there. That info was kind of buried in news reports about how the House Appropriations Committee was tough on Director Mueller in the hearings earlier this week. Judging Annie Leibovitz By Her CoverIn a column this morning for TownHall.Com, David W. Almasi calls me a "race-monger" for pointing out the racial implications of the LeBron James/Gisele Bundchen Vogue magazine cover. Annie Leibovitz's photo was a recreation of a famous World War I military recruitment poster, with James in the role of the woman-lusting gorilla and Bundchen as his prey. People who see King Kong in the cover are not far off the mark. IBM Temporarily Banned from New Fed ContractsLife in the current federal government just keeps getting stranger. The EPA has banned new contracts with IBM which automatically resulted in IBM being banned from new contracts with all other fed agencies. Annie Leibovitz Monkeys Around with LeBron JamesThe cover of April's edition of Vogue has generated controversy over how NBA star LeBron James is depicted with model Gisele Bundchen. Some critics have alleged that the picture, taken by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, makes him look like King Kong carrying off Fay Wray, a racially loaded simian metaphor. Others don't see it at all, suggesting that James is demonstrating the same intensity he shows on the court and people are trying too hard to be offended. A comparison between the cover and a World War I recruitment poster should settle the argument. Leibovitz was clearly, unmistakeably using one of the world's most famous black men to portray a ferocious gorilla carrying off a white woman. |
