My incredibly supportive and feminist husband changed his last name to mine. Below is the email he sent to his family explaining it. To me this one of the many ways that our participation in the fight for marriage equality has strengthened and grown our relationship.

Among the attention around President Obama's speech in Cairo, a small but important step was taken by the White House that may go overlooked. Thanks to Sam Stein over at HuffPo for catching it. "As part of broader effort to recast Muslim-American relations, the Obama White House released a new video on Wednesday night highlighting the work of Muslim-Americans in federal government."

As Jane Bryant Quinn Points out in an article advocating for a Financial Products Safety Commission, there are a smattering of laws on the books that could have prevented many of the abuses we are now confronting. Unfortunately, the entities tasked with enforcing and/or applying those laws did not do so. Why? There's an inherent conflict of interest.

Is President Obama entitled to the benefit of the doubt if we're unsure whether he's making a right decision, and when we wouldn't have given the same benefit of the doubt to former President Bush?

You all know James Inhofe, the Republican Senator from Oklahoma who famously declared the Global warming is the "greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people" on more than one occasion. Yet this fierce opponent of Al Gore and anyone who would curb carbon emissions from the burning of gasoline in your car or coal by your local electrical utility, has suddenly decided to join two of the greenest members of the Senate, Democrats Barbara Boxer of California and John Kerry of Massachusetts in a bill to (sort of) fight global warming. Not by curbing all the CO2 that comes out of someone's Hummer. That would be heresy. Instead, he will sponsor with Kerry and Boxer a bill seeking to study "black carbon" deemed to be one of the principle accelerants of global warming in the Arctic. What is "Black Carbon?" you ask.

Last week I heard the perfect one-line description of Organizing for America. Mary Jane Stevenson, the newly hired California State Director, got up before a big room full of Democratic Party donors -- who were there to drink fine wine and eat elegant little nibbles and enjoy the name entertainment at a luxe Beverly Hills hotel " and did something unusual. She gave them a field pitch. She asked them to join OFA " which she described as "the President's Field Team."

Dear Elected Overlords: With debate about health care reform moving to center stage, I wanted to write you a brief note highlighting a basic truth. Namely, private health insurance sucks.

The issue around carbon taxes is generally framed correctly: we need to get rid of carbon. I've discussed the real world, immediate problems of burning Dangerous Fossil Fuels (DFF). There are of course carbon-neutral fuels that address climate change but even they have particulate issues that are NOT resolved. But getting rid of DFF completely should be a planetary goal for the next few decades.

Our elected overlords are right now meeting with the unelected overlords of the health care world. The meetings are intended to create a health care reform bill of some kind. But there is no reason to write such a bill at this point. HR 676 is already written. It is a Medicare for Everyone bill.

The California Department of Finance wants to "drill baby drill" off the Golden State's coastline, and they're willing to undermine 70+ years of checks and balances to do it. Will we let them get away with it?
