Congressman Joe Pitts (R, Pa) has never really been known as an intellectual. And since he broke his promise to abide by the term limits in the old Gingrich Contract with America, even the Republicans don't think too much of his honesty.
Add me to the list of people who feel that way. Here's the honorable Mr. Pitts on the venerable Town Hall web site:
"It is also important to understand why these brutal killers have chosen to make Iraq the central front in the war on terror. Having lost their base of operations in Afghanistan due to the exemplary success of coalition forces in Operation Enduring Freedom, the terrorists are now seeking to find safe harbor elsewhere." It's too easy these days to get the idea that all Christians are wild-eyed extremists who want to replace the Constitution with their personal interpretation of the bible.
Not true, any more than it's true that all Muslims can't wait to commit suicide to hurt the infidel west.
This is a re-post of a very articulate statement from American Dreamer, a poster on another site who has consented to this re-post. I was going to post this as a comment to a diary entry from Number 6, but that entry seems to have disappeared.
Just wanted to point out 2 things about our Declaration of Independence:
It specifically says "That to secure these rights [life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, etc], Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed..." Notice that it doesn't say that government is derived from GOD.
There was an experiment years ago in which some people had the Declaration of Independence typed up on ordinary paper. They took it to a supermarket parking lot as if it were a petition, and randomly asked people to sign it. Almost all refused, and many got very angry at these commie/revolutionary ideas.
Take a guess: what and who do you think the sources are for these (scroll down for the answers):
"When 30 million are for something and 30 million are against it, things balance out and nothing happens. That is how things are with us. We are the world's Pariah not because we do not have the courage to resist, but rather because out entire national energy is wasted in eternal and unproductive squabbling between the right and the left. Our way only goes downward, and today one can already predict when we will fall into the abyss."
"We may at times during the gray preceding months have looked at the situation with a grim expression, but we never resigned ourselves to the blows of fate. The opposite....Quietly and without a lot of excitement, great things have been accomplished. The enemy's campaign of nerves is having no effect on us."
...
"Our dead have left obligations for us, and we the living are under obligation to do their will. Anyone who doubts victory has no right to be part of our community. Whoever pays attention to what the enemy says is a traitor to our cause. Who harms our war efforts by passing on enemy rumors sins against our people, for which....soldiers have died heroic deaths."
"Fascism should rightly be called corporatism as it is a merger of state and corporate power"
"Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day."
"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts."
Based on an unidentified source within the Dielbold Company, Raw Story has a post detailing concerns about the 2002 elections in Georgia and the 2005 voting in Ohio.
What about the 2004 voting in Ohio? One thing that businesses hate about blogs is their independence--if a blogger takes a dislike to you, your company or your product, they can pretty much say what they want on their blog. There's no newspaper editorial person to worry about offending advertisers, no television executive to worry about advertisers, etc.
So, companies are now plotting their own strategy for revenge/defense (it can be hard to distinguish). And business being business, don't expect civility or restraint. After all, you're messing with the money. It's gotten to the point that even Forbes magazine has felt the need to weigh in on the subject.
For those who haven't already seen it, here's an excerpt from a recent Forbes sidebar on fighting back against bloggers who attack your company: Our dear co-conspirator and sister progressive Mixter delivered a killer piece on the recent rise in credit card pieces at her blog....... Looks like "Justice Sunday" will end up with more sequels than "Nightmare on Elm Street" or the Terminator. The one and only Tony Perkins (no, not the deceased actor, the religious delinquent from the Family Research Council) just sent out the Press Release below.
Gee, Justice Sunday III. On Jan. 8. So close to the start of Alito's hearing. Not to mention the Super Bowl. Maybe they can get the guy who does the melodramatic voiceovers for football games and boxing matches to do the promos:
"God [slamming sound]. Evil [slamming sound]. This Sunday [echoing effect], one of these forces WILL HAVE TO GIVE [screaming sound]. Justice [thud]. Sunday [thud]. Three [thud]. Equal to the sum of one. And two."
Never let it be said that idle hands are the devil's workshop. No, they are merely the window into the soul (whose I have no idea). Things that occurred to me for no specific reason as I drove back to Vermont from Saratoga:
Has anyone ever considered that the president wears a wig and that it's simply on too tight?
If there is any such thing as a "jobette" instead of a job, I bet America is the world leader in that category.
Am I the only one who thinks that John Bolton looks like a villain you'd have seen on the old Dudley Doright cartoons? That he acts like one, too?
If Ann Coulter is such a stand-up-for-America guy, how come she's not volunteering for military service? Is she a lot older than she pretends?
If Jack Abramoff is a good Jew, Tom DeLay is a good Protestant, and Rick Santorum is a good Catholic, what exactly do you think Heaven looks like? And does it have a safe place to keep your wallet?
If Mary Matalin and Bay Buchanan got into a fight, how could you lose?
When Rush Limbaugh got out of military service because of a pilonidal cyst, did he immediately yell "Cyst Boom Bah"???
How many bald animals does your average chickenhawk have? It depends on the number of de-fur-ments they obtained. With the departure of A~ as the official administrator of Watching The Watchers, the task of admin work has been taken on by Lee Russ, and to an extent, yep, old #6 has some creative stuff to now add...
